This neighbourhood bar next to the Phillimonic Hall sings a song of its own – one of fantastic flavour

The Buyers Club, advertised as a ‘Neighbourhood Bar’ and ‘Fresh Pasta Kitchen’, is tucked down a dark, cobbled alleyway in Hardman Street, Liverpool. It was recommended by my friend as she picks, and I eat (some call it laziness; I call it good will).

We stepped into a world crafted with bare bricks after passing through the empty outside seating area. The lights were low, but the mood was not. The place was packed!

Our waiter, Johnny, offered us water – free of charge – as we browsed the menu which contained a range of: starters, fresh pasta, pizza, desserts, and the choice to order food for the table. As we are truly cultured culinary experts, we ordered the ‘Pepperoni Calabrese’ (which, for my uncultured folk, is a Pepperoni Pizza). With crispy, gooey cheese and a lightly charred crust, I couldn’t wait to indulge. They were generous with the serving of pepperoni and pickled jalapenos, and the tomato base was rich and tangy. Together, there was a delicious umami flavour. The base was slightly floppy but, fortunately, it wasn’t soggy from the sauce or oil.

We also ordered the polenta fries which looked like eight, thick, glistening Jenga blocks. They were dusted lightly with Pecorino Cheese that had melted. When I took a bite, even though it had a crunch, the centre was light and plush. And I was delighted to find, after dragging my chunky fry though the thick dollop of garlic aioli served at the side, that it tasted even better. It was creamy, cooling, and slightly sweet – perfect for the salt and truffle oil on the fries.

But unfortunately, the meal had to come to an end.

We paid £31.80 between the pair of us because of the January deal. I would have happily paid full price because the Buyers Club makes some of the best Italian food in Liverpool. Please break up with Dominoes (even if that student discount is calling your name) and give this restaurant a chance.

I would call it a hidden gem, but considering how busy it was, I’ll just call it a gem.
